Comunica UPT: What were the reasons that led you to a degree in Tourism at the University of Portugal?
Sofia Gomes: The decision regarding the Tourism area was taken in basic education and has remained over the years. The choice of the university was thought out in detail, including visits to various universities and an intense evaluation of each curriculum plan. In the end, it was the UPT that stood out in both aspects.

What were the most memorable moments, over the past three years?
The most remarkable moments are related to the practice. It was an incredible experience, I learned many “lessons” that will be useful to me in the future. It was an excellent way to integrate me in academic life, in higher education and to meet wonderful people.

What are the secrets to your academic success?
I think academic success comes from everyone. My goal has always been to finish my degree successfully and I worked hard to make it happen. However, I have not stopped living my life. I studied, worked, attended the practice and still had time for friends and family. Reconciling everything was not easy, but in the end, my time and priorities management were very worthwhile!

For those entering university again, do you want to leave two pieces of advice?
The first piece of advice is to focus on the study. Do not make the investment you are making ever be in vain! The second is participation in practice. Enjoy the freshman year to the fullest – that’s the best!

At the moment, do you have some professional challenge at hand? If so, which one?
No, I am not yet in a profession. This is a year in which I am still promoting my training so that, yes, I can enter the world of work even more qualified.

In the future, what professional challenges would you like to embrace and why?
I have a great desire to be able to practice the profession of guide-interpreter, preferably in Portugal. Being in contact with different people, from different cultures, has always fascinated me. I know I would be delighted to show you all that our country has to offer.

In your opinion, what skills are required of a tourism professional?
The command of foreign languages is essential – English, as it is the universal language, and French. It is also essential to easily adapt to any situation, the taste and commitment to the work that is done.
